La Bandita Story
On the Tuscan coast, just a few kilometers south of Bolgheri with its world famous vineyards, where the impenetrable wild forest covered hills of the Maremma Toscana begin, our team discovered a small, hidden valley near the medieval town of Suvereto.
In this valley, in ancient times thieves found their hideout, after raiding and looting villages and farmers in the Val di Cornia. The only remaining thieves today are thousands of wild boars from the confining natural reserve park of Montioni, eager to taste every single grape at its perfect ripeness.
The place called ’Podere La Bandita’, how the noble families in Tuscany often called their hunting grounds, sitting on top of the gentle slopes of the valley and confining with the untamed wilderness of the forest, turned out to possess all the requirements necessary to realize a dream. The triumvirate’s dream to produce a Tuscan ‘first growth’, a wine of great character and longevity, able to compete with the world’s best.
The exceptional micro-climate of the valley with high excursions of temperature in autumn and the terrain’s stunning similarity to the soil structure of the Médoc makes the site a perfect place to grow Cabernet. Apart from an existing plot with more than 50-year-old vines, approximately five hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were planted, consisting of various carefully selected clones and rootstocks. The first bottled vintage from these vineyards originates from the 2011 harvest.
Milia, is the name of the small river that once formed the valley, is an assemblage from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with great depth and complexity, ’un vino importante’, like the Italians say, perfect to accompany any meal. Milia Bianco is a fresh and crispy white made from Vermentino, destined to accompany the fabulous fish from the Tuscan coast.
Podere La Bandita, is the estates top cuvée, a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Much of the character of this wine reflects the position of its vineyard, on the edge between the wild animalistic territory of the forest and the calming hills of the cultivated land around, distinctly and proudly being a ’first growth’ from the Costa Toscana.
